It helps the individual to deal with personal issues in life such as anger, anxiety, depression, and relationship or parenting issues. Group Counselling

Counselling groups usually comprise of 6-8 participants who meet face to face with a trained group therapist to work on a common issue. Group members often find it encouraging to learn that other people have similar difficulties, thoughts and emotions. The focus then shifts from considering themselves as defective to learning strategies to manage the issue and decrease its impact on their lives.

Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of distress or unease caused by fear of danger or misfortune. When faced with danger, Anxiety is a natural response that everyone experiences, and it triggers our fight or flight response. People with anxiety disorders experience persistent fear or worry, which is out of proportion to the circumstances, causing them significant distress. For 1 in 10 people, anxiety prevents them from living their life the way they want to, stopping them from doing the things they want or need to do. When anxiety interferes with the daily functioning of a person, anxiety counselling can provide the necessary strategies to help them bring their anxiety down to a more manageable level.
Some questions to help assess the impact anxiety may be having on their daily functioning might be:

  • Do they often try to avoid going places?
  • Do they have trouble speaking or performing in front of others?
  • Do they often feel sick or nauseous before events in their life?
  • Do they worry excessively before a new experience?
  • Do they have difficulty getting to sleep at night?
  • Are they shy or withdrawn in social situations?
  • For children, do they resist being separated from their parents?
  • Do they panic excessively before tests or exams?
  • Do they often overthink things, causing them to worry?
  • Are they reluctant to participate in group activities?

If the answer to a number of these questions is ‘Yes’, then anxiety counselling can provide strategies to enable the person to overcome these obstacles.

Trauma and PTSD
Many individuals can experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic circumstances. Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness are a few emotions that can linger post traumatic events. Counselling can help the person overcome these symptoms and guide them through the process of grief and healing.

Depression

Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how a person feels, thinks and acts. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home. Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can include:

  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Loss of energy or increased fatigue
  • Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., hand-wringing or pacing) or slowed movements and speech (actions observable by others)
  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Counselling can help change thinking patterns and build coping skills to recover the motivation, perspective, and joy that the person once had in their life.

Additional Therapies

Counselling can also address a range of other issues and give you the necessary strategies to overcome these difficulties. Skills in anger management, stress management, social interaction, conflict resolution, relationship building and parenting can be acquired through counselling.
