Individual counselling is a process through which clients work one on one with a trained mental health clinician in a safe and confidential environment. It helps the individual to deal with personal issues in life such as anger, anxiety, depression, and relationship or parenting issues. Counselling allows the individual to explore their feelings, beliefs and behaviour, and work towards the desired change.
Individual counselling for children and adolescents can target a range of issues regarding their behaviour. Some of these issues may be anger, anxiety, depression, school avoidance, and issues with eating or relationships. Counselling groups usually comprise of 6-8 participants who meet face to face with a trained group therapist to work on a common issue. Group members often find it encouraging to learn that other people have similar difficulties, thoughts and emotions. The focus then shifts from considering themselves as defective to learning strategies to manage the issue and decrease its impact on their lives.
Anxiety
Anxiety is a feeling of distress or unease caused by fear of danger or misfortune. When faced with danger, Anxiety is a natural response that everyone experiences, and it triggers our fight or flight response. People with anxiety disorders experience persistent fear or worry, which is out of proportion to the circumstances, causing them significant distress. For 1 in 10 people, anxiety prevents them from living their life the way they want to, stopping them from doing the things they want or need to do. When anxiety interferes with the daily functioning of a person, anxiety counselling can provide the necessary strategies to help them bring their anxiety down to a more manageable level.
